What I did was get a grinder and taper the threads end of the bolt ever so
slightly. You'll see that the bolt extends about 1/4" beyond the metal it
bolts into.

Therefore, tapering just enough wont result in a lack of threads.

I ground it to look like this:

Instead of this"

Then take a wire brush to remove the burrs that remain from grinding and
file the remaining thread "nubs" to finer points (to retain a gradual
sloping threads).

When you slide the bolt in, slide it in as much as possible. then when the
bolt gets to the other side and cant go in, Tap it with a hammer enough to
"catch" the first threads. Then the bolt should slowly torque and center
itself onto the other side where the threads are.
