Most import cranks and I am pretty sure Nissan included are nitrided
from the factory. This only goes so deep so when you cut the crank you
get into the soft part of the metal. Not good.

That being said, I have had several cranks with very minor imperfections
in the surface. All I have done is use some emory cloth to clean it up a
bit (remove any roughness) then put a properly sized bearing in. I've
done this a few times now, and although I don't have long term oil
analysis and I haven't disassembled any of the engines again, they are
all still running fine nowadays.
